Sheets

Screws (line-fastening estimate — verify your board's fastening pattern)

Using 3×5 sheets (15 sq ft each) with 10% waste: 100 × 1.10 / 15 = 7.33, rounded up to 8 sheets. Using 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) with 10% waste: 100 × 1.10 / 32 = 3.44, rounded up to 4 sheets. Fewer large sheets mean fewer seams but they are heavier and harder to cut.
For floor installation using joist/stud-line fastening: about 30 screws per 3×5 sheet (scaled proportionally for 4×8). This is the line-fastening rate per USG Durock and HardieBacker guides. Yes, for floor installations. A 1/4-in square-notch thinset bed bonds the board to the subfloor and eliminates flex (which cracks tile). This calculator shows the bedding thinset as a separate item — floors only; wall installations typically use screws only without a mortar bed.
The standard allowance is 0.5 linear ft of tape per sq ft of board — so 100 sq ft of board needs 50 linear ft of tape. A 150 ft roll covers about 300 sq ft. Tape all seams and corners; embed the tape with thinset before tiling.
Both are cement-based backer boards rated for tile substrates. HardieBacker (James Hardie) is typically thinner and lighter; Durock (USG) is heavier and stiffer. Coverage per sheet is the same for equivalent sizes: a 3×5 = 15 sq ft, a 4×8 = 32 sq ft regardless of brand. Fastener patterns and edge treatments differ — check the installation guide that comes with your specific board.
