What Size Trowel for Tile? (Notch Chart)

The trowel notch is the dominant variable in thinset consumption — it determines how thick a mortar bed is combed onto the substrate. Here is the reference chart for common tile sizes, plus the live calculator below.

How the thinset formula works

Step 1 — coverage per bag by trowel notch

3/16 V: 95 • 1/4×1/4: 90 • 1/4×3/8: 64 • 1/2×1/2: 45 • 3/4 U: 44 sq ft / 50 lb bag

Step 2 — back-buttering adjustment

effective_coverage = coverage / 1.35 (if back-buttering)

Back-buttering applies a second skim coat to the tile back, adding roughly 35% more mortar. Required by ANSI/TCNA for large-format (15+ in) tile and natural stone.

Step 3 — bags

bags = ⌈ area × (1 + waste/100) / effective_coverage − 1e−9 ⌉

Bags are always rounded up to whole bags. The −1e−9 guard prevents a phantom extra bag when the division lands exactly on a whole number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does trowel size actually make that big a difference?

A significant one: the 1/2×1/2 in square-notch uses almost exactly twice the mortar per sq ft as the 1/4×1/4 in notch (45 vs 90 sq ft per bag). Using the wrong (smaller) trowel leaves voids under the tile, causing hollow spots, cracked grout, and eventual tile failure. Always match the trowel to the tile size.

Can I use a larger trowel than recommended?

A slightly larger notch than the minimum recommended generally will not cause problems — more mortar contact is rarely a failure mode. The risk is "mortar bleed" into the joint if you over-fill. Stay within one size of the manufacturer recommendation.

What is the difference between a V-notch and a square-notch trowel?

A V-notch trowel has triangular-shaped notches and leaves a thinner, lighter mortar ridge — used for small tile and mosaics where you want minimal bed thickness. A square-notch trowel leaves a more uniform, deeper rectangular ridge and is the standard choice for tile 4 in and larger. U-notch trowels are a square-notch variant with a rounded bottom, preferred by some installers for large-format tile.

What coverage should I expect from each trowel size?
